How to mix and match patterns like a pro.

Often clients ask me how to work with patterns, whether it is how to pick the right solid to go with a pattern or how to mix patterns in an outfit. What it all comes down to is color. Making sure your colors are coordinated is key. I work with the same colors in the top and bottom pieces. I pull them together with a third solid piece, which includes one of the colors in the color scheme for the outfit. Adding in a solid piece will help bring balance to the outfit.

The third piece isn't always necessary. If you are unsure, a third solid will tie everything together. Once you start mixing patterns, you will get the hang of it. You will learn what works and what doesn't. It just takes practice.

I would start with using some stripes with florals. This combo is easy to put together. When working with stripes, always be sure to keep in mind where you wear your stripes. I suggest putting them on the smaller section of your body if they are horizontal. Stripes naturally give the illusion of something bigger. The bigger the stripe, the bigger it looks. This can be a very useful tool if you would like to add to an area of your body to make a more balanced appearance.

Check out this image to the right. She has navy in all three pieces as her base color. She uses white as her neutral and red as an accent color. I love this combo. Three totally different patterns executed perfectly in a nice casual outfit for the weekend or a weekday. I would pair this with a red pump to give the red a bit of repetition. This will pull the look together from top to bottom.
